“Red Parrots” Collection

Statement of “The Red Parrots” Painting Exhibition:

The transmission of traits—ranging from the color of skin, hair, and eyes to temperaments and illnesses—is a legacy passed down through generations: from mother to child, and onward through successive lineages. We, the inhabitants of this restless and demanding corner of the Earth, are the inheritors of affliction. However, our appearance may shift between light and dark, but the pain remains constant. It travels across communities and is carried from one generation to the next. We are all bound—by kinship and by suffering. The telling of one person’s pain awakens the memory of another’s. Pain itself becomes our shared covenant, just as the parrots in the tale of Rumi’s master, upon recounting their companion’s affliction, became afflicted themselves.

The present collection is a narrative of grief—a testament to the constriction and anguish that, in recent years, has become a collective experience. It transcends the corporeal and takes on an archetypal form. Giti Norouzian’s parrots have been depicted and reimagined again and again. With each iteration, they have become more distilled, more refined, more luminous—until all that remains is the crimson of their shared suffering and the interwoven nature of their fate. In the hope that the knot might one day be undone, and these painted reds, these woven fates, may finally be released.
